By Carolyn Farrell

Congratulations to CivE Professor Eric Miller on receiving the Wilbur Smith Distinguished Transportation Educator Award from the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE). This annual award recognizes a professor who has made an outstanding contribution to the transportation profession by relating academic studies to the actual practice of transportation.

Professor Miller is the Director of the University of Toronto Cities Centre and Chair of the International Association for Travel Behaviour Research. The City of Toronto uses Professor Miller’s “GTAModel” system to forecast regional travel demand in the GTA and develop transportation policy. His research team is currently developing advanced microsimulation systems for modeling travel and other urban spatial processes.

Through his teaching, research, participation in professional conferences and field trips, ranging from local to international, Professor Miller has provided his students with excellent opportunities to relate their academic studies to the actual practice of planning, design and operation of transportation systems. His students have found challenging and rewarding jobs with prestigious organizations throughout the world.

"Professor Miller is a gifted and dedicated educator who puts his students first despite his many administrative and research commitments,” said Cristina Amon, Dean, Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. “I am delighted that he has received this well-deserved honour.”

Professor Miller received his award at the ITE 2009 Annual Meeting and Exhibit, held August 9-12 in San Antonio, Texas.
