Office of Advancement update

By Vanessa Abaya

The first quarter of the new fiscal year ended July 31, 2009, and resulted in close to $8 million in new gift commitments to the Faculty. These commitments will support a variety of projects, including the expansion of the Mining Building, Engineering Leaders of Tomorrow, research collaborations, equipment purchases and student scholarships. In addition to the confirmed commitments, the Faculty has approximately $5-million in verbal commitments and $3-million in solicitations in progress.

The Office of Advancement has been pursuing new projects and initiatives. In June, with assistance from the Division of University Advancement, a new annual fund web page (https://donate.utoronto.ca/engineering) was launched, making it easier for our alumni to make online donations to the Faculty. In July, the Calgary Skule™ Alumni Chapter celebrated its inaugural Calgary Student Send-Off and awarded its first two admission scholarships. Over the summer, the Office of Advancement worked with the Engineering Alumni Association to establish BizSkule™, a program that will engage alumni with an interest in business and entrepreneurship. Their first event was held on September 22, featuring Anthony Lacavera, Chair & CEO of Globalive Communications (ECE 9T7).
