Professor and Chair Jonathan Rose elected ACM Fellow

By: Carolyn Farrell, Director, Awards and Honours, Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering

Professor Jonathan Rose, Chair of The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been elected Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) "for contributions to the architecture and computer-aided design of field-programmable gate arrays."

ACM is an educational and scientific society uniting the world’s computing educators, researchers and professionals to address the field’s challenges. The 2008 Fellows will be formally recognized at the ACM Awards Banquet on June 27, 2009, in San Diego, CA

Professor Rose is a pioneer and world leader in the area of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). He has done seminal research in both FPGA architecture and the computer-aided design (CAD) tools needed to use and explore them, and has participated in the architectural development of the two key commercial FPGAs in the market today.

Professor Rose is a triple alumnus of the Faculty. He joined the Department as a faculty member in 1989 and has served as Chair since 2004.

This is one of two Fellows awards to the University of Toronto. Only three were awarded in Canada. Engineering leaders MIT and Stanford each received four Fellows.
