Engineering Professor Receives IEEE Computer Engineering and Science Award

Professor Emeritus Ken (K.C.) Smith, of The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been awarded the Computer Engineering and Science Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), for lasting technical and educational contributions to electronics for computing.

Professor Smith is a triple alumnus of the University of Toronto, obtaining his BASc in Engineering Science, MASc in Electrical Engineering, and PhD in Physics. He joined the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering as an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering in 1960 and was appointed to the rank of Professor in 1970.

Professor Smith served as Chair of The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering from 1976-1981. In 1997 he co-authored the textbook Microelectronic Circuits with fellow U of T professor Adel Sedra. Currently in its fourth edition, it has sold over one million copies, making it the world’s best-selling Engineering textbook.

He will be presented with this award at the IEEE Canada Awards Banquet on May 4 in St. John's, Nfld. during the annual IEEE Canada Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering.
