Research Update

Faculty Energy Research Event: February 22, 2008

We would like to invite all faculty to attend a Faculty Energy Research Day taking place at the Faculty Club on February 22, 2008, 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.

The aim of this event is to get faculty working on energy-related research projects together and to initiate discussion on how we can better leverage our existing research, promote collaborative research and build for the future.

The event will also allow us to showcase current research projects through a graduate student poster session. If you currently have research interests in this area please consider submitting a graduate student poster. We plan to offer best poster awards.

If you are able to attend could you let Carolyn Farrell know at carolyn.farrell@utoronto.ca  by Wednesday, February 6.

Best wishes,

Stewart

NSERC/Inter-American Collaboration in Materials Research (CIAM)

The next Call for Proposals for the CIAM Initiative will be made in spring 2008 as part of NSERC's Special Research Opportunity (SRO) Program. Another email will be sent around to the Departments in the spring.

The CIAM Initiative supports opportunities for interactions among materials researchers in order to build on the strengths of each country. Researchers planning to seek funding for collaborative projects under this initiative should apply to their respective countries. Eligible Canadian researchers may plan bilateral projects or multi-lateral projects with foreign researchers eligible for funding from one of the partner granting agencies; NSERC will give priority to multi-lateral projects. NSERC anticipates providing $1.5 million over three years to this initiative.

A letter of intent must be submitted in August 2008 (exact date to be announced in the spring). Applicants will then be selected and invited to prepare a full application due fall 2008.

New in 2008: The maximum allowable requested amount from NSERC for a single project is now $60,000 per year for 3 years.

Funding decisions are expected to be released in late spring 2009.

Researchers interested in planning a multi-lateral project for the next CIAM competition may apply at any time for SRO Pre-research funding to assist in the planning.

Revised Administrative Procedures for the Engagement of Post-Doctoral Fellows

This is to remind you that the Revised Administrative Procedures for the Engagement of Post-Doctoral Fellows came into effect January 1, 2008, and should be used for the engagement of all new post-doctoral fellows. All current post-doctoral fellows should be issued with revised engagement letters that meet these terms no later than June 30, 2008.

All post-doctoral fellows are now required to register through the SGS Post-doctoral Office. A web-based application has been developed to facilitate the registration of post-doctoral fellows and the details of the process have been communicated to administrative staff by the SGS Post-doctoral Office.

A health/dental benefit plan for post-doctoral fellows has been developed through Green Shield. The plan is available only to PDFs whose stipends are processed by University of Toronto. Post-doctoral fellows engaged through the affiliated teaching hospitals will continue with the benefits plans arranged through those institutions. Information sessions for PDFs regarding the benefits plan have been arranged for:

Thursday, January 24, 2008, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Health Sciences Building, 155 College St., Room 610

Tuesday, January 29, 2008, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Location TBA (this will be posted on the SGS Post-doctoral Office website as soon as it is confirmed)

The annual cost of this mandatory benefits package is $600. The newly established minimum annual stipend is therefore $28,100 ($27,500 plus the cost of benefits). It is hoped that supervisors of currently engaged PDFs will increase their stipends by the amount of the benefits package.

We would be grateful if you would ensure that all faculty who engage post-doctoral fellows are aware of the new procedures. Copies of this memorandum, the Policies for Post-doctoral Fellows and the Revised Administrative Procedures for Engagement of Post-doctoral Fellows will be available on the Provost’s website.
