Professor Doug Perovic Honoured with Canadian Metal’s Physics Medal

By Kate Brand

In recognition of outstanding scientific contributions in the area of nanocrystalline metals leading to new technologies and distinguished service to the Canadian materials science community, Professor Doug Perovic, Chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering will receive the Canadian Metal Physics Medal.

“Professor Doug Perovic has made pioneering and lasting contributions to the multidisciplinary field of nanoengineering through his leadership in creating the world’s first undergraduate degree in nanoengineering and his research in nanocrystalline metals,” said Cristina Amon, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. “We are proud of this outstanding recognition which is a tribute to the pioneering and innovative leadership Doug brings to this Faculty."

Professor Perovic is a world-renowned expert in how materials are made and selected for use in products, the development of materials at the molecular level, and the damage and repair of materials has led him to serve as an expert for hundreds of projects, including the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003.

In 2001, Professor Perovic launched the world’s first nanoengineering undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto and continues to serve as Chair of this degree. He is a three-time graduate of Materials Science and Engineering and has led the Department as Chair for two terms.

The Medal will be presented at the Canadian Materials Science conference at the University of Alberta June 19. As part of this honour, Professor Perovic will deliver the plenary lecture at the conference.
