Research Update

NSERC Discovery and Research Tools and Instruments (RTI) Grants

It is time to start preparing for your Discovery Grant application. A Notification of Intent to Apply for a Discovery Grant (Form 180) and the required appendices must be submitted by August 1, 2008.

We would also like to remind you that the deadline for the receipt of Research Tools and Instruments (RTI) Grant applications is October 25, 2008.

Discovery Grant Form 180

Form 180 is an important part of the review process. Failure to submit it will prevent the selection of external referees, and may thus have an adverse impact on the review of your application.

If you do not intend to apply this year, please send an email to NSERC by August 1, 2008, to indicate that you will not apply.

If you intend to apply, NSERC is offering two different options for preparing and submitting your Notification of Intent to Apply for a Discovery Grant (Form 180).

Before you start, you must read or consult the following documents on NSERC's website:

  • Instructions on how to complete Form 180
  • NSERC’s eligibility criteria

You are also encouraged to verify the balance of your current Discovery Grant account, if applicable, before submitting Form 180. If the available funds are sufficient to cover anticipated expenditures through the next fiscal year, please take advantage of the automatic one year extension to use the accumulated funds prior to submitting a new request for funding.

Deferring an application does not adversely affect the review of your next application, but rather demonstrates good fiscal management of the funds and allows you to re-organize your activities and postpone the renewal/re-application date by one year. It also provides the opportunity for the agency to fund other researchers with more urgent needs.

The 2008 version of the literature and forms will be available on the U of T Research website as of August 5, 2008; however, you may start preparing your application now using the current version of the forms.

Option 1: Electronic Submission of Form 180

If you are planning to complete and submit your Form 180 electronically, you should access the form through NSERC's On-Line Services website. Additional instructions on how to access the On-Line Services are found below.

Note: When you submit the form electronically, NSERC will send you an acknowledgement of receipt via email.  The status of the form on your Portfolio page will also change to “Received”. Do not send a paper version of your completed form by mail – they will only use the electronic version.

    Option 2: Submission by Mail

If you are submitting your Notification of Intent to Apply for Discovery Grant (Form 180) by mail, there are two ways of preparing your application:

    • Completing Form 180 online: You will have to access the form through the On-Line Services webpage.
    • Completing the PDF version of Form 180: You will have to go to the PDF version of Form 180 on the NSERC website, print a blank Form 180 (from the File menu bar at the top of the page, select "print"), and complete the form using a typewriter.
Once completed, mail the appropriate number of copies of the Form and required appendices to:

    NSERC
    350 Albert Street
    Ottawa, ON K1A 1H5

In September, NSERC will provide U of T's Research Services Office with a list of all completed Form 180 submissions, and they, in turn, will advise your department.

Please send your advance material to NSERC as soon as possible, but no later than August 1, 2008. This information allows NSERC to start planning some aspects of the review process including, preliminary Grant Selection Committee (GSC) assignments and the selection of appropriate external referees.

Important Change to the Personal Data Form (Form 100)

As part of Form 100, NSERC applicants are required to describe their contributions to the training of Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP) by providing certain details about the individuals they have trained or supervised. Due to federal Privacy Act rules governing the collection of personal information, applicants are now required to obtain consent from these individuals before providing personal data about them to NSERC.

To help the applicant obtain this consent, NSERC has created a form called Consent to Provide Limited Personal Information about Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP). NSERC is making this form available in advance of the Discovery Grants Application deadline to give you extra time to collect the required signatures.

When using this form to seek consent, you will need to assure the individual that the information collected will only be used by NSERC for the purpose of assessing your contribution to HQP training. You must keep these signed consent forms on file and, if requested, make them available to NSERC.

In cases where it proves difficult or impossible to obtain consent, you will still be able to list contributions to training using generic data and descriptions that do not identify those supervised.

If you would like to find out more about the Discovery Grants program please visit the NSERC website or send an email. Questions regarding the On-line Services can be directed to the NSERC Help Desk, Monday - Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm (EST). The Help Desk can be reached by telephone at 613-995-4273 or by email.

Funding Opportunities: NSERC Idea to Innovation Program

      Internal deadline: June 19, 2008
      NSERC deadline: July 3, 2008

The NSERC Idea to Innovation (I2I) Program is a highly focused program intended to assist researchers working with their Industry Liaison Office (ILO) to accelerate the pre-competitive development of promising technology and promote its transfer to Canadian companies. Researchers must first make an invention disclosure to the university (for campus-based faculty) or the hospital (for hospital-based faculty). I2I applications must be supported by the university's ILO or the hospital equivalent (hospital-based faculty) in order to be eligible for this program. For campus-based faculty, the university's ILO is The Innovations Group (TIG). The TIG officer or hospital equivalent officer involved in the application must be identified in the technology transfer section of the proposal.

The disclosure, technology assessment and application preparation are lengthy processes which can't be completed at the last minute. These applications involve Research Services (UTRS), the ILO (TIG or hospital equivalent), a partner if it is a Phase II application, as well as the applicant. Please allow enough time to ensure all these steps have been taken and that application is in preparation well before the internal deadline.

Applicants with a potential health sciences focus in their proposals are encouraged to consult with a Program Officer from either NSERC or CIHR in advance of submission. The Program Officer will assist in determining whether the proposal should be directed to I2I or CIHR's Proof of Principle (POP) Program.
