Honours and Awards


Engineering Professors Honoured at the SCI Annual Awards Banquet

Congratulations to Professor Emeritus David Boocock, who received the LeSeur Medal at the Society of Chemical Industry's (SCI) annual awards banquet on Tuesday, March 4, at the Sheraton Centre on Queen Street. This Award is in recognition of the research that lead to the successful commercialization of the Biox process for producing synthetic diesel fuel from waste oils. Professor Boocock has had an impressive and successful career as a teacher, researcher and academic administrator.

Alumnus and Adjunct Professor Howard Goodfellow received the Canada Medal of the Society at the same event. Dr. Goodfellow is President and CEO of Tenova-Goodfellow, which has developed a world-leading and recognized technology for controlling environmental emissions in the steel industry. This technology is now being developed for power production, the cement industry and the pulp and paper industry. The Canada Medal is awarded for outstanding service to Canadian industry
that is based on chemistry for its processes and/or services. Recipients are typically business leaders who have had a significantly positive impact on their business and on the Canadian industry as a whole.

Other Department alumni and colleagues who have received SCI awards include Professors Howard Rapson, Douglas Reeve and Michael Sefton, and alumni Dr. Larry Seeley, Dr. Phillip (Rocky) Simmons, and Dr. Bert Wasmund. Professor Emeritus James Smith is a member of the Executive and Awards Committees of the Canadian Section of the SCI.
