Two U of T Engineering Professors Among TVO’s Best Lecturer Contenders

Nominated by their students, ECE Professors Jason Anderson and Glenn Gulak are among 125 teachers from 24 universities and colleges to be recognized as Ontario’s Best Lecturer in the fourth annual TVO competition.

Out of the 125 nominees, 20 will be selected to move to the next round based on submitted tapes of their lectures. Then, a panel of judges will select 10 finalists who will be invited to deliver a lecture on the TVO Big Ideas program in late winter. Viewers will vote for the winner on the basis of these lectures.

Professors Anderson and Gulak join four other Engineering professors who have been nominated in this competition in previous years. In 2005, Parham Aarabi, ECE and University Professor Michael Collins, CIV, were nominated. In 2007, Bryan Karney, CIV, and John E. Davies, IBBME were nominated in addition to Parham Aarabi.

Here’s what students said about the professors they nominated:

"No other professor can teach 'C' in the way Jason Anderson does. His way of teaching is very easy to understand."
Glenn Gulak

"Professor Glenn Gulak has inspired me with his level of enthusiasm. He is very involved with students in his lectures while relating everything he teaches to their real world applications. He has inspired my creativity to look at digital electronics in a completely different and creative way."

The competition is intended to raise awareness of the great educators within Ontario’s post-secondary educational sector. Students of any registered university or college in Ontario were eligible to submit nominations. The winner’s university or college will be awarded a $10,000 TD Insurance Meloche Monnex scholarship.
