Spotlight: Final Exams & Final Marks

The Engineering Student e-News tackles your frequently asked questions about final exams and final grades.

Why is the final exam period condensed this semester?
As you may recall, our academic year started later in September than usual.  In addition, the University of Toronto will close on Friday, December 18th.  The Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) requires 12.8 weeks of class.  These three major factors have resulted in a very compressed exam schedule; exams will begin on Thursday, December 10 and end on Friday, December 18.

The Registrar's Office has worked hard to spread the exams out where possible and have had to resort to scheduling Saturday and evening exams in order to lessen the inevitably heavy burden on many students.  We are committed to ensuring that students will take no more than two exams per day.

What is considered a final exam conflict? What do I do if I have a conflict?

The Faculty defines two types of conflict:

  • Two (or more) final exams scheduled at the same time or overlap.
  • Three (or more) final exams in three consecutive exam schedule slots or three exams that occur within 24 hours.

For example, a final exam in each of the morning, afternoon and evening of one day or a final exam in each of the afternoon and evening of one day and the morning of the next day. Note: Having final exams in each of an afternoon, evening, and afternoon of the following day would NOT be considered a conflict because the three exams occur in four scheduled slots and do not occur entirely within 24 hours.

If you have qualified final exam conflicts, please visit the Registrar’s Office in GB 157 no later than Dec. 1.

I’ve made travel plans in the middle of the final exam period. Can I have my final exam schedule re-arranged to fit my plans?
Students who make personal commitments during the examination period do so at their own risk. Special consideration will not be given and special arrangements will not be made in the event of travel conflict. If you are forced to miss a final exam due to unforeseen circumstances, you must submit a petition online through the Engineering Portal.

I’ve shown up to write my final exam but I’m not sure which room I am supposed to write in.
The timetable of examinations and a list showing assigned rooms for each course will be posted in prominent locations before examinations, and on the undergraduate website.

What should I/can I bring with me into my final exam?
You are permitted to bring the following: pen, pencil, hardcopy bilingual dictionary, drafting instruments, and, if permitted, an electronic calculator, but not the calculator’s case. Cell phones, pagers, BlackBerrys, PDAs, or other communication devices are items that are not permitted in exam rooms. For more information, please see the Faculty Final Examinations Rules and Regulations.

You must bring your T-Card to your final exam for identification purposes.

I feel stressed! Where can I find study space during the final exam period?
All students need quiet places to focus, study and work, as well as space for group learning and collaboration. University of Toronto offers numerous study spaces throughout its campuses with extended hours, enabling students to study between classes, at night and on weekends in a comfortable, non-intrusive atmosphere.

Counselling and Psychological Services has tips to manage stress effectively.

How do I order an exam copy/final mark re-check after writing my final exams? When will I be able to view my final mark?
After the final exam period, you will be able to order copies of your final exam or an arithmetical re-check of your final grade through the Engineering Portal. There is a $13 charge for each service but the charge is refundable for final mark re-checks if an error in your final mark is discovered.

Final grades will be available to view in mid-January.
