New Home for First Year Office

By Jennifer Fabro

In mid-November the First Year Office left its longtime nook in the Registrar’s Office and took over a new space next door in GB 170 (the former Dean’s office). The move allows the First Year Office to be a home base for First Year students. Just as upper-year students can visit their Department, now First Years have their own self-contained starting point for all their advising needs.

The First Year Office team includes First Year Counsellor, Leslie Grife; Student Success Specialist, Lesley Mak; First Year Assistant, Jennifer Fabro; Barbara McCann, Faculty Registrar; and Professor Susan McCahan, who is the Chair of First Year. Between January and June 2010, Professor Mark Kortschot will also be part of the team as Acting Chair, First Year. Together they work to support First Year Students and programs by providing academic advising and referrals to other campus services. The Office also administers the T-Program, ReFresh, and Success101, and can help with program transfers, petitions, timetables, and many other types of inquiries.

The Office is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except for Tuesdays when hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. First Year Students are welcome to stop in and grab some helpful handout sheets and ask any questions they may have about their current studies, Faculty regulations, or general inquiries about the University and what it has to offer.

In addition, students may book an appointment with the First Year Counsellor and Student Success Specialist to talk about their academic concerns in a private setting. Reach the First Year Office by phone at (416) 978-4625 or by email at firstyear@ecf.utoronto.ca.
