New 'Math, Stats and Finance' Major Approved for Engineering Science

On January 12 the University’s Committee on Academic Policy and Programs approved a new Engineering Mathematics, Statistics and Finance Major in Engineering Science. This new Major will be the first undergraduate program of its kind in Canada. Students will be provided with a strong background in mathematics and statistics, and an understanding of how these disciplines apply to practice in quantitative finance through the use of engineering tools, such as optimization. Students will learn about how financial theory impacts the dynamics of financial instruments, markets and the global community.

The Engineering Mathematics, Statistics and Finance Major will be led by faculty members in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering in cooperation with the Department of Statistics, the Department of Mathematics, and the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. This Engineering Mathematics, Statistics and Finance Major will open doors for graduates across a wide spectrum of disciplines such as consulting engineering, the public sector, energy, mining, insurance, banking, aerospace, and manufacturing. Students in Engineering Science will be well matched for the demanding rigor of this Major and will be well prepared to enter both industry as well as tier 1 North American graduate school programs in related fields.
