U of T Aeronautics Team win five awards at SAE Aero Design West competition

Early March in Van Nuys, California the University of Toronto Aeronautics Team (UTAT) were handed an 18” by 13” by 5” box. Three minutes later they had constructed a Micro Class aircraft that soared into first place in the competition and secured a 30-point lead in the Class.
The successes continued. In Regular Class competition UTAT placed seventh out of 29 teams with their eleven-pound aircraft that carried eighteen points. The design team applied both design and construction innovations to calculate the best over-all construction and to address how to efficiently and effectively build their aircraft.
"UTAT's success is the result of a lot of hard work and is very well deserved. The competition gave the students a great opportunity to apply the knowledge they have learned at U. of T. We are very proud of their accomplishments," said David Zingg, Director of the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies.
The team flew home with the NASA Systems Engineering Award, 1st place overall in micro class, 1st place in payload fraction, 1st place in micro class design report and 3rd place in micro class oral presentation.
