A Special Issue: The Boundless Campaign

This past Saturday, more than 600 alumni, faculty, students and staff – the largest ever gathering of the Skule Community – joined to celebrate an 'Afternoon of Engineering Innovation,' which, through panel discussions, faculty lectures, and research presentations, highlighted the tremendous creativity and collaboration that makes U of T Engineering the top engineering school in Canada and among the best in the world.

The event, which publicly launched Engineering's $200 million Boundless campaign, the largest-ever fundraising initiative for an engineering school in Canada, was organized around the following five themes:

• developing global engineering leaders;
• nurturing engineering innovation and entrepreneurship;
• advancing information and communications technology;
• revolutionizing biomedical engineering and healthcare engineering; and,
• reshaping the future of energy, the environment and sustainability

The centrepiece of Engineering's campaign will be the first new building for the Faculty in over a decade: the Centre for Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship, which will house the nerve centres of our Faculty's extraordinary, interdisciplinary research centres and institutes, where many of the challenges addressed through the Boundless Campaign will be met. The building will also feature highly interactive teaching and learning space and light fabrication facilities to allow students to create prototypes of new products. I look forward to sharing more of these exciting plans in the coming months.

The event was an opportunity for us to thank our many generous donors, and to publicly announce a number of significant commitments – many of them in support of the new building – which have been made during the past months. Thanks to all of you, we are well on our way to success.

We planned the event to coincide with the beginning of the school year and the arrival of our new students. The average entering mark for our first-year class was an incredible 91.3 per cent, the highest in the Faculty's history. These students are an important reminder of Engineering's boundless potential, just as you, our alumni, embody the impact and legacy of a U of T Engineering education. You are our ambassadors in the world, and you make us proud daily.

With so many of you spread across the globe, you will be pleased to know we have re-launched our Alumni site, which we hope will make it even easier to keep in touch with each other and with Skule. In response to your feedback, it is now mobile-friendly. It looks and works beautifully on desktops, laptops and now tablets and mobile phones: BlackBerry, Android and iPhone. We've also created a brand-new LinkedIn community of which I encourage you to become a part. We look forward to sharing successes, opportunities and events with you. Please join us there.

Finally, to all of you, thank you for your involvement, encouragement and engagement as we move to new levels of achievements.
