Message from Dean, Cristina Amon

The enthusiasm and drive of U of T Engineering student leaders is well recognized, with their dedication and initiative resulting not only in high academic achievement, but also a distinguished record of co- and extra-curricular activities and community outreach on a global scale. Given the rigor and demands of our curriculum, their level of engagement illustrates a deep sense of responsibility to enact change.

Our strong and capable student government is but one example. Jonathan Asmis’ work as President of the Engineering Society in 2008-2009 has been outstanding and I extend my heartfelt thanks to him and his fellow officers Jimmy Lu, Daryl Martis, John Matienzo, George Missios and Cyrene Wu. Our 15 Cressy Awards, nearly double the number earned last year, provide further evidence of the breadth of leadership of our students and recent alumni, ranging from student clubs and athletics, to tutoring new immigrants, to organizing a Global Citizens’ conference abroad.

The global focus of our student activity is growing. Increased participation in Engineers Without Borders shows the commitment of our students to grapple with issues such as the root cause of poverty and to address global challenges, which often motivates the selection of an international Professional Experience Year. We are working to expand opportunities for our students to study and work abroad to reach our Faculty’s goal of educating tomorrow’s global Engineering leaders.

We take great pride in the achievements of our student leaders, who generously share their time and talent in contributing to a better world.
