Student Wins at CGS Event
At this year’s Canadian Geotechnical Society – Southern Ontario Section annual CivE graduate student presentation event, Feng Dai (supervised by Kaiwen Xia, CivE) won second place for “A Semi-Circular Bend Technique for Determining Dynamic Fracture Toughness and Fracture Energy of Rocks.”

Personal Milestones

A Celebration of Births in Engineering:

Xiahong Yao, a Research Associate with SOCAAR, and his wife Ain welcomed Ashylee Yao, born at 11:30 p.m. on January 1 at Women's College Hospital.
Carole Baxter, CivE, gave birth to son Isaac Louis Baxter at 9:08 a.m. on January 15 weighing 9 lbs 4 oz.
ESRRO Associate Director Janet Hunter gave birth to baby Beatrice Cyrille Floren on February 12 weighing in at 7 lbs 1 oz.
MIE Lecturer Jane Farwell had a baby girl on March 16. Chloe Danielle Postma weighed in at 9 lbs 1 oz.

In Memorium:

Margaret Hewer passed away in early March, unexpectedly and suddenly, in her sleep. Margaret was an administrative assistant working in the ECE Communications Group and had been with the department for 14 years.
