Professor Andreas Mandelis Receives 2009 IPPA Senior Prize

By: Carolyn Farrell

Professor Andreas Mandelis, of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, has received the 2009 Senior Prize from the International Photoacoustic and Photothermal Association (IPPA). The IPPA Prizes, awarded biennially, are aimed at recognizing scientists or engineers who have made significant contributions to the field of Photoacoustic and Photothermal Science and Technology. The prizes are awarded for single outstanding contributions or sustained contributions made over a number of years.

Andreas Mandelis is a pioneer in the development, shaping and applications of diffusion-wave sciences and associated technologies. Over the past 30 years, his wide-ranging research has helped define the discipline, and extended its range to practical uses in materials research, industrial process quality control, dental caries diagnosis and soft tissue imaging. Professor Mandelis is the Director of the Centre for Advanced Diffusion-Wave Technologies (CADIFT) at the University of Toronto. He is the author of more than 260 scientific papers in refereed journals, as well as the acclaimed textbook Diffusion-Wave Fields: Mathematical Methods and Green Functions. Professor Mandelis is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. In 2007 he was the inaugural recipient of the Premier’s Discovery Award in Natural Sciences and Engineering.

“Professor Mandelis continues to set the bar higher and higher in terms of scholarly achievement and international recognition,” said Cristina Amon, Dean, Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. “We are grateful to him and to the IPPA for bringing international attention to the outstanding work being done in the Faculty.”

Professor Mandelis will be honoured in a special plenary session at the 15th International Conference on Photoacoustic and Photothermal Phenomena, in Leuven, Belgium, July 19-23, 2009.
