Graeme Norval Named Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada

By: Carolyn Farrell

Dr. Graeme Norval, Lecturer and Associate Chair and Undergraduate Coordinator of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry, has been named a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC). The CIC is a professional association of chemists, chemical engineers and chemical technologists associated with industry, academia, government and other organizations across Canada and around the world. Fellowship recognizes the merits of CIC members who have made major contributions to the profession of chemistry, chemical engineering or chemical technology.

Graeme Norval is a senior chemical engineer specializing in the process engineering and chemistry of inorganic chemicals. He is a triple alumnus of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry, where he now serves as Associate Chair and Undergraduate Coordinator. As a Lecturer for the Department, Dr. Norval teaches process and equipment design at the senior undergraduate and graduate levels, and developed a third year course covering the steps of process engineering. In 2008, he won the Department’s Professor Bill Burgess Teacher of the Year award, which recognizes outstanding teaching in classes with fewer than 80 students.

Dr. Norval is also the principal of GWN Chemical Consulting, Inc., offering consulting services to clients in the chemical industry in Ontario and Quebec. Projects range from economic evaluations of new chemical products and processes to root cause identification of process upsets. Dr. Norval is also an active member of his professional community; he is currently the Director of Conferences for the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering and was on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Catalysis Foundation between 1998 and 2006.

“I am delighted that Dr. Norval has been recognized by the Chemical Institute of Canada for his many valuable contributions to the profession,” said Cristina Amon, Dean, Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. “He is a dedicated member of the professional community and has served the Faculty with commitment and distinction.”

Dr. Norval will be presented with his Fellowship certificate at the 8th World Congress of Chemical Engineering in Montreal, which will be held August 23 to 27, 2009.
