Engineering Research Receives $17 Million from Ontario Government

More than $17 million in funding from the Ontario Research Fund Research Excellence program will directly support Engineering research projects at the University of Toronto, the Ministry of Research and Innovation announced last week.

“This investment from the Ontario Government enables our Engineering researchers to partner with Industry to create innovative technologies to meet the dynamic needs of our ever-changing world and to foster knowledge-based economic development in the Province,” said Professor Cristina Amon, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. “We are grateful to the Ontario government for the strong support, which is also a testament to our research excellence.”


Engineering projects receiving funding include:

• $7,313,275 to Warren Chan of the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, a Canada Research Chair in Biotechnology – Quantum Dot Diagnostics Project

• $3,040,000 to Dimitrios Hatzinakos of The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering – Self-powered Sensor Networks

• $5,000,000 to Nazir Kherani of The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering – High Efficiency Silicon Photovoltaics

The following Engineering projects, led by researchers at other institutions, also received funding:

• $1,102,500 to Robert Andrews of the Department of Civil Engineering. • $366,000 to Nasser Ashgriz of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, who is a co-investigator on a project led by Professor Xianguo Li from the University of Waterloo – Green Auto Power Train

Reza Iravani of The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is the co-investigator of a research project led by Professor Jane at Queen’s University – Greenhouse Gas Emission Free and Energy Efficient Power Technology for Information Systems http://www.ele.utoronto.ca/~iravani/
