Research Update

2008 Strategic Project Grants (SPG) 2008 Competition

Internal deadline (optional proposal review): TBA
Internal deadline (application review and signature): Monday, Apr. 7, 2008
NSERC deadline: Tuesday, Apr. 15, 2008

Please note the following changes for the 2008 competition:

  • 3 target areas—Advanced Communications and Management of Information, Healthy Environment and Ecosystems and Sustainable Energy Systems—will have an increased competition budget due to additional earmarked funds received. Each of these areas has been broadened to include a wider range of research topics.
  • The competition budget is expected to be approximately $20 million; 70% of the budget will be allocated evenly among the 7 target areas. The remaining 30% will be allocated incrementally to the 3 areas highlighted above.
  • Co-applicants from outside the natural sciences and engineering may be incorporated into the proposals.
  • Applicants are encouraged to incorporate international collaborations into their proposals.

The goal of the Strategic Project Grants Program is to increase research and training in targeted areas that could strongly enhance Canada’s economy, society and/or environment within the next 10 years.

The Strategic Project Grants program funds early-stage project research in targeted areas. Research project requirements:

  • The project must support the goal of the SPG program and fall within one of the 7 targeted areas listed in the program description.
  • The objectives and scope of the project must be well-defined. The duration may be from 1-3 years.
  • At least one academic researcher and at least one supporting organization must collaborate in the project.
  • The supporting organization must be actively involved in all stages of the project; therefore, in-kind contributions are required, but cash is not.

Note regarding partner in-kind contributions: The in-kind contribution should be, as a minimum, the time of the partner's scientific/technical staff. We recommend that you start now to firm up those partner commitments and signatures on support letters and Form 183A for this competition. Some partners have very lengthy approval processes. Failure to have this documentation at the time of application is one of the most common reasons that signatures from our office are delayed.

Preliminary Applications to NSERC Strategic NETWORK Grants Program—
2008 Competition

Please let Debbie Bilinski know if you are planning to submit a preliminary application to the 2008 competition.

New preliminary applications to the Strategic Network Grants Program will be accepted in the following 3 strategic target areas:

•    Advanced Communications and Management of Information
•    Healthy Environment and Ecosystems
•    Sustainable Energy Systems (Production, Distribution and Utilization)

These target areas fall within the areas highlighted in the Government of Canada’s science and technology strategy and will benefit from increased earmarked funding.

Strategic Network Grants fund large-scale, multi-disciplinary research projects in targeted research areas that require a network approach and that involve collaboration between academic researchers and Canadian-based organizations. Strategic Networks may be local, regional or national. Strategic Networks usually require a minimum of $500,000 and a maximum of $1 million annually from NSERC and are funded for up to 5 years. Strategic Network Grants are not renewable.

The applicant should be an established researcher with a solid track record in collaborative research, student training and grant management, and who demonstrates the leadership and other skills necessary for managing a complex, interdisciplinary, multi-institutional project.

Research Services internal deadline: Friday, Jun. 6, 2008
NSERC deadline to receive preliminary applications: Friday, Jun. 20, 2008

NSERC will post minor revisions to the Strategic Network Grants program description and application instructions on its website in early March.
