Javad Mostaghimi Elected Fellow

MIE Professor Javad Mostaghimi, Director of the Centre for Advanced Coating Technologies (CACT), has been inducted as Fellow of the School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo. This honour is in recognition of his distinguished contribution to the research and education of the School of Engineering in Tokyo, in addition to his accomplishments in Engineering research and education.

The University of Tokyo is recognized as one of the world's foremost universities. The School of Engineering is the largest graduate school of the University of Tokyo and has 750 faculty and staff and 3,000 graduate students. The School's mission to to seek challenging research at the world-leading level, in the pursuit of creative intellectual development and technical innovation through endless cultivating of new industries and culture, as well as contributing to the sustainable development of society for all human beings.

Professor Mostaghimi was recently appointed a University of Toronto Distinguished Professor in Plasma Engineering in recognition of his highly distinguished accomplishments.

Professor Mostaghimi’s main research interests are in the study of thermal spray coatings, transport phenomena and electromagnetics in thermal plasma sources. He has published more than 100 papers in refereed journals and has been cited approximately 1,500 times. His research has also resulted in four patents. In 1998, he founded CACT, which is internationally recognized for its fundamental and applied multidisciplinary research in thermal spray coatings.

From 2002-2006 he served as the Vice-Dean, Research and Graduate Studies for the Faculty, overseeing a nearly 50% increase in the number of doctoral students and coordinating the creation and implementation of a number of international agreements.

Professor Mostaghimi is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering, and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. He is a Senior Fellow at both Massey College and the Institute for Advanced Studies, University of Bologna. In addition, he is currently a member of the Advisory Board of the Ontario Research Fund and the Board of Management of the Centre for Materials and Manufacturing – Ontario Centres of Excellence.
