Professor Paul Santerre Appointed Director of IBBME

Professor Paul Santerre has been appointed Director of the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering (IBBME). His five-year term begins September 1, 2008.
 
Professor Santerre is Associate Dean of Research and Director of the Dental Research Institute for the Faculty of Dentistry at U of T where he is cross-appointed to IBBME and the Departments of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry as well as Materials Science and Engineering.
 
“Paul’s outstanding contributions to the IBBME, Dentistry, Medicine and Engineering communities will ensure that IBBME continues to be a distinguished global leader,” said Cristina Amon, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. "We are indeed fortunate to have such a wealth of committed talent within the University."
 
An accomplished academician, dedicated teacher, and internationally renowned researcher with career grants exceeding $10 million in peer-reviewed funding for his research, Professor Santerre is a Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering, and has received numerous awards including the Ontario Ministry of Health Career Scientist Award. His research interests explore the physical, surface and biological characterization of polymers, novel biomaterial development, drug polymers, applications of material biodegradation in tissue engineering and medical device manufacturing.
 
Professor Santerre received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from McMaster University in 1990, MScE in Chemical Engineering from the University of New Brunswick in 1985, and Honours BSc in Chemistry from Dalhousie University in 1983. He also obtained an Engineering Diploma in 1980 from Collège Militaire Royal de St-Jean in Québec. He joined the University of Toronto in 1993 after teaching in the Department of Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa.
