"Major" Change for Engineering Science

Eng Sci StudentsThe University's Committee on Academic Policy and Programs recently approved that "Options" in Engineering Science be renamed "Majors", effective June 2008.

The change will give Engineering Science graduates proper recognition for the fields they focus on in their third and fourth years of study. The change will be reflected on Engineering Science students' official transcripts. The Faculty will continue to refer to these fields as the "Options" Engineering Science students get to choose from at the end of second year.

This proposal was first brought forth to the Faculty's Dean, Chairs, Directors and the Engineering Science student body by the Division of Engineering Science in 2007, and it received broad support. The general sense was that "Major" is an appropriate designation because it is a term that is widely recognized and understood outside of the University by employers and graduate schools.

In Engineering Science, students pursue their chosen fields of specialization after two foundational years of study. For students in other Engineering programs, the decision regarding field of specialization is made upon entry into Year 1, or at the end of Year 1 for Track One students.
