NSERC E.W.R. Steacie Fellowships 2010 – Call for Nominations

Internal Deadline: June 12, 2009 | NSERC Deadline: July 2, 2009

NSERC awards up to six Steacie Fellowships annually for a two-year period. Successful Fellows are relieved of teaching and administrative duties to be able to devote all their time and energy to research. The Fellowships are held at a Canadian university or affiliated research institution.

Universities have been asked to forward up to six (6) nominations only that are demonstrably outstanding.

The Fellowship normally includes a contribution to the University in the amount of $90,000/year toward the Fellow’s salary. As part of the Fellowship agreement, the University is expected to fund a replacement for the Fellow’s teaching and administrative responsibilities or to enhance the research environment of the Fellow’s Department. However, should the recipient of the Fellowship be the holder of another federal award that has a salary component, such as a Canada Research Chair (CRC), University Faculty Award (UFA), and Industrial Research Chair (IRC), NSERC will contribute only $30,000/year to the university for teaching release for the Fellow.

An E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship may not be held concurrently with a Discovery Accelerator Supplement (DAS). DAS recipients may be nominated for a Steacie Fellowship but, if successful, will be asked to defer one of the awards.

Fellows will be eligible to apply for supplemental funding to their Discovery Grant and submit an application to the Research Tools and Instruments program for equipment funding related to their Steacie research.

At the end of the Fellowship, Fellows must report on the impact of the Fellowship on their research and career, and, if applicable, how they used the supplemental support received.

Eligibility

Candidates should have obtained their doctorate within the last 12 years (i.e., 1997 or later) and hold a grant from NSERC. (Parental leave taken for child-bearing and rearing is not counted as part of the 12-year period; however, such periods MUST be identified in the letter from the nominator).

Candidates may not apply on their own behalf. They must be nominated by senior members of the Canadian science and Engineering community, and nominations must be endorsed by the executive head of the candidate’s university. For more information on the nomination process, please refer to: http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Prizes-Prix/Steacie-Steacie/Nomination-Nomination_eng.asp

Important

Nomination materials should be written for non-specialists as the internal Adjudication Committee and the NSERC Selection Committee are multi-disciplinary.

U of T Adjudication Process

There will be an Adjudication Committee to select the top 6 nominees from the University. The following factors will be used in assessing the nominations:

  • Candidate's stature in the scientific or engineering community, both national and international
  • Importance and scope of the candidate's research and its impact on the field
  • Candidate's specific accomplishments within his/her field
  • Candidate's overall suitability for this award

To be considered, all nomination materials should reach the Office of Research Services by June 12th. This internal deadline is fixed to give the Committee sufficient time to review and evaluate the nominations. All nominees will be informed of the results of the adjudication. The top six candidates will be given an opportunity to make any revisions to their submissions. Nomination materials will be sent to NSERC in one package to meet the July 2nd NSERC deadline.

Please notify Research Services in advance if your unit is submitting any nomination. The Office of Research Services contact information is provided below.

Enhanced Research Funding – MITACS ACCELERATE Internship Program

In recognition of the growing demand from professors to support multiple graduate students and/or post-doctoral fellow through a larger research project in collaboration with one or more industry partners, MITACS has introduced Internship Clusters. Internship clusters require a minimum of $30,000 from a partner and provide enhanced funding leverage combined with the ACCELERATE Program’s flexibility. Please speak directly with a Business Development Director to discuss your particular project and learn more information.

Furthermore, the MITACS ACCELERATE program is currently seeking proposals from professors, graduate students, and post-docs in any Faculty or Department for research projects conducted in collaboration with Ontario companies and other organizations. This innovative internship program funds 4-, 8-, 12-, 16- or 24-month research projects.

MITACS ACCELERATE is open to all university faculties and departments that train graduate students including Arts, Engineering, Humanities, Physical Sciences, Applied Sciences, Social Sciences and many more.

The MITACS ACCELERATE benefits for professors, graduate students, and post-docs

  • Leverages your existing funding from industry
  • Provides funding of a grad student/post-doc
  • Provides a valuable career opportunity for grad students and post-docs
  • Application process has limited paperwork; quick turnaround. Proposals are accepted at any time
  • Foreign grad students can participate
  • Can help you to attract grad students and post-docs

Details

The intern, under the supervision of a faculty member, spends approximately half of his/her time over a minimum four-month period onsite with an eligible Ontario partner (a company, industry association, not-for-profit or crown corporation) or in the field, developing a better understanding of a jointly-identified research problem of importance to the company. The balance of the intern’s time is spent at the university with a professor, developing a solution to the organization’s challenge.

The company’s contribution of $7.5K per four-month internship unit is matched by MITACS, with funding support from the Government of Ontario and the Government of Canada. The intern receives a minimum of $10K of the $15K in funding, with the remaining $5K supporting other costs associated with the project.

Although internship proposals are accepted at any time, it is strongly recommended that proposals are submitted at least 6 weeks in advance of the anticipated project start date. This will allow adequate time for peer-review and transfer of funds to the university. The MITACS business development team will assist you with the application process.
